The original idea was to establish a global aviation law
practice using an "open skies" jurisdiction operating as a hub for international
air traffic as our Firm's base. Dubai fit the bill perfectly! Conveniently
located between Europe and Asia, close to Russia and the other CIS republics
and a short hop to the Asia sub-continent and Africa with good connections
to North America, Dubai has established itself as the pre-eminent communications
and commercial center of the Middle East. Over one hundred airlines regularly
use Dubai and its sister emirate Sharjah. With the new Dubai airport and
its permanent airshow site and Dubai's drive to encourage entrepreneurship,
commerce is expected to continue to grow exponentially.
While capitalizing on the many benefits that Dubai has to offer, our Firm
is committed to playing an active role in the development of Dubai, the
Middle East generally and the aviation industry worldwide.
On behalf of ICAO, Donald Bunker has been involved in various projects
in Lebanon as well as acting as a special advisor on the financing of
the CNS/ATM navigation system and is very active in teaching through McGill
University and other institutions. Members of our Firm are currently participating
in the drafting of U.A.E. Civil Aviation Laws with a view to the creation
of a national Aircraft Mortgage Registry which will undoubtedly strengthen
the U.A.E.'s position as a leading aircraft finance center. We are also
actively involved in various international business councils in the U.A.E.
and are regular contributors to aviation and non-aviation related journals
published in Dubai and abroad.
